FAQ

FAQ

Why are the leaves so large and flat? This is a specific variety of tea tree (Shi Da Cha) that naturally grows large leaves. The flat shape comes from a traditional craft where each leaf is hand-pressed between mesh screens. This isn’t just for looks – it helps the tea steep evenly and prevents bitterness.

Does it taste like regular green tea? Not exactly. It’s much softer. While many green teas can be grassy or astringent, Taiping Houkui is famous for its “Orchid Rhyme” a delicate, floral sweetness with a clean, buttery finish. It’s one of the most approachable green teas for those who don’t like bitterness.

How many leaves should I use for one cup? Since the leaves are so large, weighing them is best. We recommend about 3–4 grams per 200ml. If you don’t have a scale, that’s usually about 4 to 6 full leaves.

Can I brew these leaves more than once? Absolutely. You can steep these leaves 4 to 6 times. In fact, many tea lovers find the second and third infusions to be the sweetest and most fragrant.

What is the best way to store it? Like all green teas, it’s sensitive to light, heat, and air. Keep it in its original airtight bag, stored in a cool, dark place. Because the leaves are fragile, try not to place anything heavy on top of the bag to avoid breaking them.

Why is it called “Monkey King”? Legend says the tea grew in high, rocky cliffs where only monkeys could reach them. Today, it’s a title of respect for its status as one of China’s “Top Ten” legendary teas.

Brewing Method

Brewing Method

  • Classic: 3-4g per 300ml | 80°C | 2-3 min. Use a tall glass to watch the leaves stand upright. Crisp, refreshing, and buttery with a light floral finish.

  • Gongfu: 4-5g per 150ml | 75-80°C | 20s, 30s, 45s. Unlocks the legendary “Orchid Rhyme.” Elegant, smooth texture with deep notes of sweet bamboo and spring rain.

  • Cold Brew: 6-8g per 1L cold water. Steep in the fridge for 4-8 hours. An incredibly clean, nectar-like infusion. Refreshing, naturally sweet, and zero bitterness.

Description

Description

Taiping Houkui is a true standout, even among China’s famous greens. It’s grown in the high-altitude forests of the Huangshan mountains, where the air is cool and the soil is rich. What makes it famous, though, is the sheer size of the leaves – long, flat, and vivid green.

Every single leaf is a result of intense labor. During the spring harvest, makers pick one bud with two leaves and then hand-press them individually between screens to create that signature “criss-cross” texture. This isn’t just for looks; the gentle pressing keeps the leaves intact, so they release their flavor slowly and never get that sharp, bitter bite you find in lower-grade greens.

The Profile This is a “quiet” tea. It’s not aggressive. It’s known for its Lan Yun or “Orchid Rhyme” – a natural, floral sweetness that stays with you. You’ll taste fresh spring water, sweet bamboo, and a hint of blanched asparagus. The texture is thick and almost buttery.
